When my kids were young, they spent a tremendous amount of time and effort trying to get me to let them to do more things, with less supervision. (I suspect this is the core effort of all kids, everywhere, throughout history.) When they were very little, their go-to tactics included begging, pleading, whining and pouting. As they got older, and as they learned that, generally speaking, these approaches did not yield favorable results, their tactics evolved to rely primarily upon claims of unfairness and peer privilege (e.g., “you never let me do anything” and “so-and-so’s parents let him/her do it”). Still didn’t work.
